About STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections)

The big myth..Women can’t get STIs from other women - not true! It is not uncommon for uninformed General Practitioners (GPs) and healthcare professionals to pass on information such as this due to the lack of understanding regarding LBQ female sexual health. If you are engaging in intimacy with another person, irrespective of gender, you need to be aware of the potential exposure to STIs.

Like what?

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Genital Warts (HPV)
  • Crabs/Pubic Lice
  • Trichomonas Vaginalis (TV)
  • Molluscum Contaguisum
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Herpes

*** N/B: This is not an extensive list

Tips on how to avoid this..

  • Talk about safe sex with your partner.
  • Ask questions - you may be glad afterwards!
  • During sex use an oral/genital barrier form of protection (condom, dental dam, latex glove).
  • Always use barriers properly and ensure they are in date (if applicable).
  • Follow the instructions on the condom / dental dam and practice putting them on.
  • Think twice about having sex if you are under the influence of drink or drugs.
  • Look out for any unusual discharge, sores, rash or bumps - However you or your partner may never exhibit any signs or symptoms of an STI!
  • If you suspect that you or the person you have slept with may have an STI or even if you are unsure - get checked out (its not as embarrassing as you think)!

How does it happen?

In the same way heterosexual couples can transmit STIs, so can two females. This happens through the sharing of bodily fluids and/or toys (aids).
  • Saliva
  • Genital contact
  • Vaginal Fluids
  • Menstrual Blood
  • Cuts, tears, lesions
  • Breast milk
  • Sharing sex toys (unless cleaning with appropriate hygienic fluids or using condoms when appropriate)
